Did Jesus have a Vision Statement?

A question inspired by this week’s learning is: Did Jesus have a vision statement?

If he did, I don’t know if he would have called it that. But I do believe that there are statements that Jesus made that share Jesus’ long term goals and aspirations for his disciples and for those who would believe in him in the years to come.

I’ve assembled a reading from each of the gospels that could be a contender for Jesus’ vision statement. I invite you to explore one (or more) or these texts. You’ll need a bible, a piece of paper and something to write with or a digital equivalent.

  • Grab your bible or head over to www.biblegateway.com to look up one of the following:
    • Mark 1:14-15
    • Matthew 28:16-20
    • Luke 10:25-27
    • John 13:34-35
  • Copy the verses of your selected verses into the middle of the paper.
  • Under the phrases which you think could be a vision statement.
  • As you continue to reflect on these works, think about what images and colors you would use to represent this vision. You can either draw them or describe them in writing around the verse.
  • Are there other passages that come to mind that could be a vision statement for Jesus? Look them up and copy them on the paper as well.
  • What about a vision statement for your community of faith?
  • For you?

Save this paper as it may come in handy as your group continues to explore your community’s branding. (You could even take a picture and share it with your group!)

I invite you to prayer:

Creating God, you have called me beloved and entrusted me with gifts to share your love and grace on earth. Help me recognize these gifts and identify ways that I can use them to join in the work of your kingdom following the example of Jesus. May the same be true for my community of faith. Guide us in this renewal journey that even as the world changes, your steadfast mercy may be proclaimed. Amen.
